The best advice for dealing with accidents is to get to them as quickly as possible and try to remove as much as you can before it seeps into the rug. Having a spill kit set up ahead of time can save you from having to scramble when accidents occur. A basic area rug spill kit should contain a spray bottle filled with a 70/30 solution of water and a clear, pH balanced, non-alkaline, non-bleaching shampoo --similar to hair shampoo or detergent, some clean and absorbent cotton or paper towels that won’t pill up and a wet/dry vacuum. Always test for color fastness before attempting any area rug cleaning or spot treatments. Apply a colorfast test using the following procedure: In an inconspicuous area of the area rug, preferably the back, apply a small amount of hot water (usually less than a cup). Then using a cotton towel, apply pressure to the area for 5 minutes or longer. If any color transfers to the cloth then you need to send your area rug to a professional for cleaning. If color doesn’t transfer then you can safely begin cleaning your area rug.

Do you really wash Oriental area rugs?

Yes. Area rugs have been washed for thousands of years on the banks of rivers and lakes ever since the very first rug stain and today, wet washing is still the best way to get your area rug truly clean from the foundation to the pile. Our wet washing service is modeled after the same time honored rug cleaning methods practiced centuries ago. When we’ve finished wet washing your area rug, we’ve leave nothing behind, so when it’s sent back to you it’s as pristine as is the day it was finished.

When you wash an area rug, won’t it shrink?

Most rugs have either cotton foundations or wool. Rugs with cotton foundations, when washed, won’t shrink and rugs with wool foundations are blocked to ensure the rug retains its original shape.

Can stains be removed?

Yes and no. Our business is area rugs, and our technicians are the best at what they do, but in some cases a stain cannot be removed only reduced. Over our 32 years we have seen some disasters become miracles. Stains can be removed, but it all depends on the type of stain, what’s been done to it already and how old the stain is. The fresher the stain is, the better the chances of removing it. Old stains are much more difficult to remove. If you already know what type of stain it is, let us know ahead of time.

Should I steam clean my area rug?

The short answer, no. Steam cleaning services, particularly truck mounted steam cleaning services, are designed to clean synthetic carpeting of a single color and not multicolored area rugs with natural fibers. Cleaning your area rug using these services is risky at best that among other problems, often results in shrinkage, yellowed fibers and color bleeding. The high temperature water can also strip the natural protective oils from the rug giving it a dull look and making it more susceptible staining in the future. Steam cleaning services only clean the surface of the rug. The techniques they use will not remove the years of accumulated sediment deep inside the foundation and often only temporarily hide stains and odors that will reappear later on. The best method for cleaning your area rug is to have it thoroughly washed, rinsed and completely dried. This is not possible to do in your home.
